Throughout history, the ability to pick up and move to "greener pastures" has permitted generations of horses to thrive on forages. Total freedom and mobility has meant they naturally received nutritional variety from the vastly different geographic areas they frequented.
But today's horses are typically limited to a single type of forage in one geographic area. So they need help to achieve the nutritional balance they once derived naturally.
That's Where Natures' Essentials Comes In
Thanks to extensive research and field testing, Purina Mills has learned how certain nutritional advantages can help horses live longer and be more active and productive during their lifetimes even with the added stresses of training regiments and performance expectations.
Purina Mills is proud to introduce the new Natures' Essentials line, which includes two products: Born to Win and Mare & Maintenance.
Born to Win pelleted horse supplement is designed to be fed with moderate quality forages usually grass and mature legumes that can vary in crude protein content on a dry matter basis anywhere from 5 to 15%. Born to Win is a concentrated source of quality protein, vitamins and mineral. When fed with unfortified whole grain (such as oats) and/or moderate quality forages (grass or legume hay types), Born to Win can serve a variety of lifestyles including growth, reproduction, moderate performance and active pleasure. Born to Win contains 32% protein essential for tissue growth and maintenance, added fat for hair coat and skin condition, added Lysine for tissue growth and repair, and added Vitamin E and B Vitamins for metabolic and immune function. Born to Win contains quality, nutrient dense ingredients highly digestible for proper nutrition with less volume and less waste. For horses that are "easy keepers" and are able to maintain their desired body weight on grass or hay alone, Born to Win can be fed in small amounts (1 to 3 pounds per day) to ensure that the horse's protein, mineral and vitamin requirements are met without adding extra calories which would lead to unneeded weight gain. (Feeding recommendations are found on the tag, and are based on the following assumptions: an expected mature body weight of 1100 pounds, and the horse is consuming approximately 2.0% of its body weight in a moderate quality grass or hay).
Mare & Maintenance pelleted horse supplement is designed to complement and fortify high quality forages usually legume type, but may include high quality grass pasture or hays which can be from 16 to 24% crude protein on a dry matter basis. Mare & Maintenance contains high quality 12% protein with added Lysine for improved tissue growth and repair, and concentrated vitamins and minerals. Added Vitamin E promotes a strong immune system, and added B Vitamins improve metabolic function. The concentrated vitamin and mineral package allows Mare & Maintenance to be fed in fairly small amounts (1 to 3 pounds per day) and still meet the horse's nutritional requirements not provided by the nutrients in the grass or hay. (Again, feeding recommendations are found on the tag, and are based on the same assumptions as above). Mare & Maintenance may also be used as a supplement to balance unfortified whole grains such as oats when fed with high quality forages.
